Letter to Miss Margaret S. Worth complying with her request for his autograph for sale by the Sanitary Commission to raise funds for the relief of wounded and sick Union soldiers. Howard states that "such expressions of interest at home go a great way to encourage the soldiers in the field, far beyond the material comfort afforded."

Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19.
